Don’t miss this only-at-GW chance to learn about The Known World from its Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Edward P. Jones.

Edward P. Jones, author of The Known World, is the first Wang Visiting Professor in Contemporary English Literature at GW and he will be in residence in the English Department during the entire spring semester of 2009.  This unique opportunity allows the GW community to explore the novel through campus-wide events with the author throughout the semester.

We really want students to take part in this great opportunity - so much so that Eckles is giving away 100 free copies of The Known World!  That's right, we're having A Novel Happy Hour on Thursday just to give you free books and pizza.

...but you don't care.  You're standing on the National Mall (or perhaps are one of the lucky few sitting at the Capitol) watching history being made.

Be safe.  Enjoy tonight's ball and we'll see you tomorrow when we all thaw out.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

 - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Letter from Birmingham Jail, April 16, 1963

GW and Eckles Library are closed today in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  I know that the GW MLK Day of Service is full, but you still have service options if you are interested.  Check out MLKDay.gov for voluteer opportunities in the DC area.

Looking for an Inaugural Distraction

After much hype and ballyhoo, Inauguration Weekend is finally upon us!  Soon, you will be huddled in the freezing cold on the Mall with 4 million of your newest friends to watch history, but what are you going to do until then?  I mean, there is only so much 24-hour news coverage that any one person can stand.

Come into Eckles and we will hook you up with some inauguration themed Eckles Flix (okay, inauguration themed may be kind of a stretch, but work with me here).

If you're not familiar with the Eckles Flix program, it is a collection of DVDs chosen by students with absolutely no academic value whatsoever.  Eckles Flix may only be checked out by residents of the Mount Vernon Campus. The loan period for these DVDs is 2 days or 48 hours, after which hwe send out one of those creepy guys from 300 to hunt you down and bring back the DVD.
