Special Collections Takes Part in Colonials Weekend
GW parents and friends of the university flocked to Foggy Bottom from October 16-18 to take part in Colonials Weekend, including some very special activities sponsored by the SCRC!
On Saturday the 17th, the SCRC sponsored the "Quest to Discover GW," where groups raced around campus, visiting landmarks and learning facts about the history of Foggy Bottom and the university. The clues written by the SCRC staff led participants to landmarks such as the American Meridian at 24th and H St. and the Free Mandela monument in Kogan Plaza. The winning team, a father and daughter duo from New Jersey, won a gift certificate to Tonic!
On Sunday the 17th, the SCRC took part in the Foggy Bottom Block Party, an annual event where students, parents, GW staff, and the local Foggy Bottom community come together to eat, listen to music, and learn more about the local organizations, businesses, GW offices, and city programs that play a role in neighborhood life. Special Collections offered a pictorial history of GW and Foggy Bottom, along with some treasures from the archives that show how life has changed in the area--including a GW Football program from 1962 and a tuition bill from 1825 for $30! Hundreds of hardy souls braved the cold weather to mingle with their friends, neighbors, and colleagues and to learn a little more about the neighborhood.
