Japan Resource Center

The Japan Resource Center (JRC) was established in 2005 to provide support for advanced study on Japan to The George Washington University community, especially those at the Elliot School of International Affairs as well as to the business circle and researchers of Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.  JRC is built upon the collection of the Japan Economic Institute (JEI), a renowned non-profit research organization, which served as a key research point to the Washington area.  The Gelman Library acquired all of the JEI’s collection, when it ceased its operation in October 2000, including an authoritative resource for current information on Japan’s economy, politics, foreign policy, and on US-Japan relationship.
 
Adding up to the collection, the scope of the JRC’s collection includes the history, politics, economy, public policy, national security, culture, and foreign relations of Japan after the Meiji Restoration (1868), with a weight on the 20th century, in accordance with the academic focus of the Elliot School.  The collection format consists of monographs, periodicals, newspapers, references and databases.

JRC’s mission to serve its wider community of the Washington, D.C. is now being strengthened as a robust pillar of the Global Research Center (GRC).  Given the significance of the roles that Japan now plays, the special collection solely devoted on Japan makes the JRC unique among the private research institutions in the Washington, D.C. area. 

JRC is a circulating collection with open stack access for users. As Gelman Library is normally restricted for use only by GWU faculty and students, researchers not possessing a George Washington University ID should telephone the Reading Room staff (202-994-7105) in advance of their visit in order to be given access into the Library.
